20100123 Pecos

It was a nice snowy night so I decided to pop over to the Pecos National Monument to see what I can see!  I was planning on coming back for a sunset but it got very cloudy in the evening, so no good light :(

When I was here I was looking for patterns, and I found a few interesting things!

20100123 Fort Union

The pass for Pecos worked for Fort Union too!  So... who am I to waste 3 bucks :)  Drove another 70 miles northeast to visit Fort Union!  When I was there it was extremely windy which made photography quite hard.  Most of the walls left standing had to be supported by additional steel structures.  But what was left of the ruins made for interesting compositions!

Information on Fort Union:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Union_National_Monument

20091219 Bosque del Apache

Yep, enjoyed the last trip so much I went back again!  This time I took the D2X + 1.4x TC + 70-200.  The range was sufficient but unfortunately the TC reduced image quality a bit... so.. no posters from these pictures, but they still look great!

The latter half of the pictures were taken from Coyote Deck.

20091212 Bosque del Apache

I've been meaning to come here for a couple years now and I finally went and wasn't disappointed!  The bosque is on a major bird migration route and has thousands of various birds coming through between November and February!

The sunsets were especially terrific that day and I hope you enjoy the pictures!  Also a big hello to Mike and his friend whose company made the trip even more fun.

Notes to self

  • Bring TC and crop sensor camera
  • Dress warmly
20091107 Zattana and Nafretiri Photoshoot

The photoshoot of Zattana and Nafretiri during Mezzelli's "Night at the Museum" event.  The lighting was done with 3 SB-800s and an SB-900 with various color modifying gels in front of them with a black background behind.

Note to self:  Iron iron iron the black background for wrinkles!

20091107 Mezzelli Night at the Museum

Images from Mezzelli's "Night at the Museum".  Great dancing, lighting wasn't the greatest for photography so.. here's what I got.

20091008-10 Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta

Another Balloon Fiesta!  3 days of balloons and chainsaw wood carving competitions!

Note to self - Clean sensor!

20090919 Lebanese Festival

The 2009 Lebanese Festival and a side event at the Riverside Founders Festival with Troupe Roja and Mezzelli's Mirage dancers

20090624 Monument Valley

On the return trip from the Grand Canyon we hit Monument Valley midday.  It was far easier to drive in a Rav4 than in my Corolla.

20090621-24 Grand Canyon

Finally the Grand Canyon! Or at least, the South Rim

21 Jun:  Arrived with my parents and sister late in the afternoon and caught the sunset at various points along the east side of the south rim.  Alas the smog either from pollution or the controlled burn obscured much.  I attempted to clean up these pictures but it was very hard

22 Jun:  Sunrise at Mather point with a follow up at Yavapai point.  Later in the day we walked the red line along the Rim trail westward.  We almost made it, taking the bus from Pima Point the last mile to Hermit's Rest (the asphalt was very hot).  Great views!  Was exhausted after that so no sunset shots

23 Jun:  I walked from Mather point back to the village so covered most of the Rim trail on foot overall.  Again smog was a bit of an issue.  I shot the sunset at Hopi point and if I were to do that again, I would have gone further to Pima point to have more of the rocks below reflect the sunset light.

24 Jun:  Sunrise at Yavapai point!   It took 2 hours to get the right light through the clouds but it worked!

- Notes

  • Argh - dirt on sensor!  I did my best to keep the dirt out but I spent many hours cleaning up spots
  • Polarizer did help a bit on the smog conditions but can only do so much without overpolarizing the sky and making it look unnatural
  • Water is good!
  • People who do the Bright Angel Trail must have legs of steel!
20090621 Petrified Forest

Returned to the Petrified Forest with my parents and sister on the way to the Grand Canyon.  This time we went through the north entrance and headed south.

20090604 Bryce Canyon

As others have said, if you visit one park in Utah, this is probably it!  Bryce Canyon has a huge series of dramatic rock formations across its land which you can hike above or down in below.

I oddly woke up at 5:30 in the morning so I decided to head in for the sunrise and I wasn't disappointed.  The light arrived over the rim of the canyon into the rock formations below and from there it was one great picture after another across the park!  Later in the day I walked down the Navajo trail (Wall street side) into the canyon and came back up the Queens Garden trail.  It was definatly worth the long climb up!

Enjoy the pictures!  After this I dropped by the Coral Sand Dunes National Park, which was eh.. so-so.. then I called it a vacation and headed home.  My legs were exhausted from 5 days of hiking up and down (or rather.. down and up in most cases) across Arizona and Utah!

20090603 Scenic Utah 12

These pictures were on Utah Scenic Route 12 from Capitol Reef to Bryce Canyon.  Great scenic overlooks!  Also on the way I dropped by Kodachrome National Park, but didn't see much that I didn't see elsewhere.

20090603 Goblin Valley

I was travelling down to Capitol Reef when I saw a sign for Goblin Valley National Park and I decided to drop by and didn't regret it!  It was formally known as Mushroom Valley and for good reason.  The rocks are of many layers and the lower layers eroded away, leaving larger rocks on top to make rocky mushrooms!

20090603 Capitol Reef

Capitol Reef is another series of canyons around the Grand Staircase area of Utah. I stopped by to see the Grand Wash. There were other trails but I didn't have time on my way to Bryce Canyon and the roads to them were unpaved with plenty of large rocks to bust my tires on!

20090602 Needle Overlook

While driving north on UT 191 up to Arches I saw a sign for Canyonlands' Needle Overlook so I took the side trip and didn't regret it.  It's a terrific panorama of the rugged landscape of the Canyonlands!

It's a small world also, met a man who lived in Medina, OH.  Go figure!

20090602 Arches National Park

Definately worth a trip out here to Arches National Park!  But do be aware that all the hotels are $$$$ in the area!  I spent a day here wandering around and only saw parts of the park, there's just too much to see in one day!

A good hike is up to Delicate Arch for the famous arch picture but boy... that's a hike.  It's only about 1.5 miles and 500 ft up, but it's a pretty tiring hike over slippery rocks.  I will admit that I got lost up there too because I missed the cairn stone path.  You'll see pictures below of the arch from the side with a very large pit between my camera and it... that was the way I was going till I actually thought about it and considered the path I was taking (which was definately not safe) then I turned around and found the right path.  Unfortunately it was all dark and rainy up there so I didn't stay long.  And next time I go up.. i'm taking the 70-200, the 24-70, a tripod, water, and NOTHING ELSE.

I also saw the famous landscape arch (the really narrow one), but also unfortunately the sun was nearly set so there was no light on the bridge.  I will have to go back sometime!

20090601 Monument Valley

One of the best known landmarks of the west!  I raced over here from Canyon de Chelly trying to get in before sunset but when I arrived, it was raining out.  But thankfully within ten minutes it cleared and the sun came out and I got these gorgeous images!  This place is DEFINATELY worth a trip during sunset!  The road though is steep and dirt/gravel so drive carefully!

Note to self:  Don't get antibiotic ointment on your finger then touch the lense by accident and shoot a bunch of shots :(

20090601 Canyon de Chelly

Heard about this canyon in northeast Arizona so dropped by!  It is on the Navajo reservation who actively farm at the bottom of the canyon.  There are two routes, the north and south rim, and definately the south rim is the better of the two.  Additionally there's the White House trail which leads into the canyon to its bottom where you can see a very well preserved set of ruins.  Bring lots of water as it's a loooooong hike up!  At the end of the South Rim drive is Spider rock, massive free standing towers 800 ft high.

20090531 Very Large Array

Just the first stop of my NE Arizona and Southern Utah Trip!  And yes.. there were cows there.  I couldn't resist.  The 14-24 was a great lens for all of this wide angle stuff on its debut!  Although this is the second time i've been here, it's still impressive.

20090531 Arizona Petrified Forest

I drove through the Petrified Forest and while the petrified wood itself is.. ehh... so so to see.. the rest of the place was quite a sight!  Unfortunately the sunset wasn't the greatest in the world and the park closes at 7pm with the sunset being 7:30 pm.  I got chased away by a park ranger while setting up at Pintado Point.  The hike into the Blue Mesa is worth the trip!

20090515 - 17 Dayton World A Fair

The 36th annual Dayton World A'Fair!  Dancers from all over the region demonstrating the classic dances of the world as well as many booths filled with regional foods and decorations!

Things I learned

  • Focus Continuous, Single Shot, Dynamic Focus Area with 51 point tracking is necessary
  • Dark background = -1 ev compensation with center evaluation

Enjoy the pictures!  The performances I enjoyed the most were the Egyptian Breeze dancers and the Kenyan Acrobats.  This is worth seeing if you're in the area!

20090424 Gathering of Nations Powwow

Went to the 26th Annual Gathering of Nations Powwow at UNM!

http://www.gatheringofnations.com

There were over 3,000 dancers from all over Canada and the US representing more than 500 tribes and participating in both exhibitions and competition dancing.  In addition there was a compeition drum and singing which was simultaneous with the competition dancing.

The dress and the sounds were awesome to see and hear and it was well worth the trip out there.  Even on a Friday it was packed with both dancers and audience and I was glad to get the images I did.  Hope you enjoy!

20090321 El Morro

El Moro National Monument:  The ancient home of Pueblo indians.

One of the major features of El Morro is a waterhole filled with melted snow off of the bluff that was used by many historical travellers who then wrote their thanks on the rock, now aptly named Inspiration Rock

This was a fun little trip with a short but tiring hike with photography gear up the bluff!

20090321 Bandera Volcano and Ice Cave

A trip out to El Malpais National Monument and a special location sited near the Bandera Crater.  By Bandera is a small cave depressed into the earth made by the lava flows.  The porous lava flow acts as an insulator and allows the cave to never get above 31 degrees, hence preserving the ice throughout the entire year.  The deepest ice dates back 3,400 years and is up to 20 feet thick.

2007 Louie-Woo-Kocher-Gilbert-Ware Xmas!

Things I learned

  • BRING TRIPOD
  • Check DOF at edges of a straight line audience vs a curved one
  • Going full manual flashes is rough after relying on iTTL for so long, umbrella flashes were directed inward from the sides at 1/2 power with another behind camera aimed at the ceiling at full

20071012 Halloween Hafla

Kira's Halloween Hafla

Things I learned

  • So dark!!!! 1/100s was close, but insufficient to freeze action, but couldn't crank the ISO any further nor open it wider. Shutter speed priority.
20070930 Ohio Renaissance Festival

Leslie's day off!  So more snapping!  Concentrated on things other than the regular events this time.

20070826 Lebanese Festival

Dayton's Lebanese Festival at Riverscape!

Things I learned

  • Eh... did better than last time... still a bit dark in there.. i'm cutting off fewer hands this time though!
20070824-25 Las Vegas

Quick trip to Vegas for Creech AFB! Had a bit of time off to explore!

Things I learned

  • Aerial shots = hard. Balance between high ISO, at least 1/60th shutter speed, and any f-stop I could get (I gave up and went 2.8). Add in two dimensional vibration for more difficulties. Cities are dark too at night.....
  • Take pictures earlier in the trip such that cancelled events can be gone back to (Treasure Island pirate ship due to high winds)
20070805 Loveland Castle

OVCC - Loveland Castle

Things I learned

  • There's a castle in Ohio!!! Albeit a small one
  • White balance was critical on this one to counter the rather dreary clouds (which were too dense to make the sky interesting)
  • Remember to check camera settings before shooting
  • Stay on EJ's good side :)
20070720 Ohio Balloon Challenge

Middletown Ohio Balloon Challenge! Ran into OVCC, big hello to Mike, Terri, Steve, and EJ!

Things I learned

  • *cough* measure the exposure WHEN the balloons are lit.. not when the whole place is dark!
  • Probably should have stuck on a polarizer to reduce glare
  • Maintain over 1/100s shutter speed during balloon glow as balloons do drift
20070703 Fairborn Block Party & Yellow Springs

Egyption Breeze at Fairborn Block Party and Yellow Springs

Post processing Settings

  • IR actions: White balance on green, Photo Effects
  • Black and White, Protect Dark Details, Auto Brightness

Things I learned

  • Gotta love sunset lighting... except when it makes everyone squint
  • Overexpose a bit more on IR, about another 1/2 stop
  • Shutter speed above 1/800s seemed to be best to stop the action. Which was impossible as the light fell
20070609 Yellowsprings Street Fair

Biked 15 miles (and back..) with my camera equipment to take pictures of acrobats and bellydancers! Worth it? YES. Just gotta remember the suntan lotion...

20070506 Monty Racing

Post processing Settings

  • Dlighting Adjustment 35, colorbooster 100. Underexposed dark but good exposure bright background
20070421 Cincinnati Zoo

Cincinnati Zoo - Zoo Blooms

Things I learned

  • Remember to switch back to full matrix metering from spot metering from theatre work.. duh
  • Use tripod more for steady shots on a single target. Lost about 3 good looking ones due to just a bit of vibration
  • For IR, shoot full manual and work with the histogram
20070303 WP AF Museum

Return to the Air Force Museum w/ OWCC. Great meeting you all!

Things I learned

  • Check range of wireless SB-800s. Had some odd problems at a 45 degree angle.. shouldn't have been a problem
  • Investigate reflections and see what can be made of it
20070225 Krohn Conservatory

Another OWCC event to the Krohn Conservatory in Cincinnati! Neat place, a bit crowded but lots of neat flowers!

Things I learned

  • Mmmm... dark. Pushed ISO up to H0.3 but shutter speed was still a bit slow. Had my flashes but didn't pop them to keep lighting consistent
  • Learning the 105 micro VR, nice little lens, sometimes it's perfect, but sometimes it's a bit long.
20070218 Self Portrait

Self portrait for the challenge of the Ohio Valley Camera Club.

Things I learned

  • Trying to focus when the subject isn't there.. not fun. This was a 1 man job
  • Had lots of fun with my lights! I love my equipment and i'm glad to be actually using it!
20061231 Cox Arboretum

Took a quick drive out to the Cox Arboretum (in between rain showers). Took a few interesting shots to amuse myself with in Capture NX and Photoshop.

20061225 Family Christmas

2006 Xmas pictures!

Things I learned

  • *cough* You charged every battery except the command flash batteries...duhhhh
20061223 Clifton Mill

My first outing with the Ohio Valley Camera Club! Good to meet them all!.

For 7 bucks I can't quite say this was worth it, but I got a few somewhat interesting shots out of it. Used the 70-200 2.8 VR for most of the shots and because of the lighting, was shooting at ISO 640-1200 wide open. Which was a mistake. Wide open = depth of field of a piece of paper. So most of the pictures I am unsatisfied with because I really couldn't see in the dark. But if I closed down any, my shutter speed would have went from hard to impossible. Lots of people bumping into the tripod

Things I learned

  • DOF of a 2.8 is zilch
20061124 Charleston Falls

Huber Heights' Charleston Falls

20060903 Ohio Renaissance Festival

3 years later.. i'm back! With a 70-200 as my mainstay I was snapping away

Things I learned

  • Camera seems to be 1/3 or 1/2 stop underexposing.. might want to compensate for that
  • 70-200 + 1.4x TC is still perfectly fine for shooting from the WAY back. Albeit heavy
20060827 Lebanese Festival

Also another heads up! Lots more Middle Eastern Dances

Things I learned

  • Hard to anticipate and set up for a shot if you've never seen the dance before!
  • Heavy backlighting by rear lights calls for center and spot metering, not matrix. Blah. But nothing a little post processing can't fix if I wanted to!
20060826 Riverside Founders Festival

Got a tip from a friend about this place so I went! Fairly political w/ lots of 'vote for me' signs but still some fun!

Things I learned

  • Carrying umbrella or raingear in Ohio.. must remember that
  • Pictures below are not white balanced because i'm lazy :) i'll go back later and fix them up
20060715 Pensacola Airshow

Blue Angels and Others!

20060704 Destin Fireworks

Whew, it's been a while since I've posted anything, but most of my work has been for my unit and I can't quite put that stuff up! (promotion ceremonies, military functions, etc). Anyways this is the 2nd event with my oh so awesome Nikon D2X :) and it worked beautifully in its baptism of fire(works)!!!!

Things I learned

  • ISO 200, F8, and anywhere from 2-10 seconds still works great.
  • Expose for the shoreline if at all possible
  • Get that remote trigger ($$$)
  • The Destin bridge actually dampened the vibration from passing cars quite well, although I had headlights coming from the side which didn't help either my night vision nor exposing anything with that at an angle
  • Using Nikon Capture 4.4 now in my processing (since Photoshop CS1 ACR can't handle D2X files), it's a dramatic change which makes processing a much longer process, but I have to say I like the results.
20060429 Adventure Race

Hurlburt Field's Adventure Race for the super athletes (not me). I was one of three photographers and my pictures were posted on the base newspaper.

Things I learned

  • Position is everything. I got the best shots (honestly) because I went where the shots would be
20060324 Pensacola Swing

Take 3 at swingdancing pictures, tonight's focus was to learn more about the backlighting situation and see if anything came out of it. It was... a learning experience and it's definitely hard to get the right combination of light for what I'd consider an interesting picture. What is my fascination with the backlight? At first glance it's all about underexposed pictures, but it's not to me. It's all about contrast and simplicity, I love a 'simple' picture with just a few strong elements in it. I don't want a complex scene where the observer needs to take a minute to soak it in, I want the viewer to look exactly at the subject and, in this case, almost feel the dance taking place. The sharp contrasts in the picture gives it an edgy feeling. Another aspect of the backlit pictures is the obscuring of identities, they no longer are individuals we know, but represent anyone out on that floor.

Next project out here? I wonder how the lighting would look if I place both flashes together for one strong strobe in a single location. I would have to place myself correctly to take advantage of this, but a strong lighting from one side, and deep shadows in the back could make a picture. Who knows, let's find out :)

If anyone would like the full sized jpg of an image below, please drop me an email at aklouie@hotmail.com with a description of which picture you want, and I will get you the file as soon as I can. Thanks!

Things I learned

  • Consider putting the lighting sources closer to the ground instead of way up high
  • Tilt the primary lights towards the target area if at all possible (may need new hot shoe brackets) What the subject is wearing definitely can make or break a backlit photograph. Dark clothed men = women hanging out there in the middle of nowhere.
  • Travis, Meagan, Ashley and Phillip are awesome, but we already knew that right?
  • Massive lens flare! Perhaps move the lights further on out angle-wise. Didn't have quite such a problem last time due to getting closer to the subject with the lens. This time I focussed on getting feet into the picture and that opened up the range of view for all sorts of nasty stuff
  • When shooting normally with flashes to the rear, try putting both flashes directly behind camera and shooting crosswise, will force the camera to remain in a single location, but at least the shadows will not fall across dancers.
  • Given all the attention now that this little site is getting from swingdancers, autocross racers, friends and family.. I better clean this up and make it a bit fancier.
20060318 Bellingrath

Finally managed to get back here in the spring with some real equipment! Unfortunately the new Nikon 105 VR Macro won't be available till April and I couldn't wait that long, so the majority of these shots were with the 70-200 VR with the Canon 500D closeup lens on it

Things I learned

  • Blah for cloudy days
  • Depth of field is paper thin, need to compensate more than landscape photography
  • WHITE BALANCE MORE!!!!!!!!!!
  • Must load directions into GPS rather than relying on a mapquest map ;)
20060317 Pensacola Swing

Take 2 at swingdancing pictures, this time with a pair of SB-800's mounted about 12 feet above the floor aimed crosswise across the room Post processing SettingsThings I learned: - I like to blind people with my flashes - Need to watch out for people dancing - Flashes need to go higher to avoid having the shadows extend to the next group behind them, but not so high that shadows are prevalent under the noses/chins - Need an SB-800 mounted on the camera for a bit of fill flash and for superior rangefinding when focusing. - Stick the hood on the 18-70 lens if doing this backlight attempt again to reduce flare.

20060312 AL Autocross

Autocrossing again! (I didn't drive in this one though)

Things I learned

  • Watch reflections in car
  • Need longer lens

Alabama Autocrossing! http://www.panhandlegearheads.com

Things I learned

  • Panning takes practice
  • Clean the sensor and make sure the front lens doesn't have say.. a twig hanging in the upper left and 2 dirt specs just above the center mid. All photoshoppable out though
20060203 MN Obstacle Course

Munitions Directorate's Wingman Day. I got away with being the photographer :) Although I got my workout running around with my equipment!

Things I learned:

  • 70-200 VR.. heavy...
20060113 Pensacola Swing

Yes, believe it or not, I have taken up swingdancing. Of course though I always tend to have a camera around...soooooo

Things I learned

  • Hard to not get wacked while on the dance floor :)
  • Need to figure out a better way of lighting, possibly by increasing ISO (Nikon's foible)
20051225 Family Christmas

This time I came with 2 umbrellas powered by SB-800s on AA's (I got my Gearheads batteries a week later), happy with the lighting, I missed critical focus though a few times. I need an SB-800 mounted ON the camera itself for the more powerful AF assist.

Things I learned

  • Dark sweaters don't like to be focussed on

was on the setup crew and to do the Polaroid photographs for the kids, but I got asked to do the event photography.. I looked at the camera they said to use, and I said "Hang on, let me get my own equipment". This was a great place to test out my new 12-24 and I LOVE IT hahahahahaha. Yeah I had to get into people's faces, but it was a very good lens to work with I think.

Things I learned:

  • Aperture priority is great.. cept when you're shooting in the dark even with the flash, need to manually set that duhhh
  • Gotta stop down to f6 or so, focus wasn't quite right on some of these images
20050704 Pensacola Fireworks

I will say upfront that I am very disappointed with my work here.

There were a lot of great pictures ruined by 2 things, out of focus (I was much farther this time), and the tripod jiggled and this was accentuated by the long range! *sob* But I will present what I thought is worth showing. Don't ask for any of these except the first one to print!

Things I learned:

  • Stabilize tripod with everything I can if it's windy and long range
  • Gotta figure out how to pre-focus on fireworks.....
20050702 Pensacola Air Show

Of course I had to go to this :) Problem was that there were many delays in the show and I had a very very large amount of hanging around. Also this air show photography is rough, because it was over the ocean there was sea spray and a nice haze all over the place. There was extensive post processing done to clean up the images, although I can still see the pilots' expressions!

Things I learned:

  • OW - Need to apply sunscreen more often. Got burned badly.
  • I think the tripod + long lens made some of the police itchy.... I had a police helicopter circle me
20050630 Hurlburt Sound Fireworks

Went to this with my friend Kelley! Had front row seats on the pier.. although I did want to rip the head off of the kids behind me by the end of the night for acting like.. well.. can't say it in polite company :)

Things I learned:

  • Stuck at 2 stop ND filter in front of the lens, definitely helped in extending the exposure time!
20050428 Tucson

Haven't updated in age so here's a ton of updates all coming up at once!

I was out here for the Air Force Knowledge Management conference, actually I was quite excited to be there and to learn about how to improve the Air Force. Brought a lot of ideas back to my directorate and been working trying to implement at least some of it. They put me up in the very nice Westward Look Resort, which actually was very new to me, never been to a resort before. After the first day I went back to my room, opened the door, the lights were on, soft music playing, and a bathrobe sitting on the bed. I went "hello? Anyone here?" thinking that perhaps someone moved into my room :) What can I say, I'm not used to this treatment!

After the conference I took a day to go shooting at several sites. I had been here in Tucson before with my Canon S50 and didn't have time to play photographer, but this time was different! I wandered around the resort a bit, then the Tucson Botanical Gardens, then hit Sabino Canyon. The Canyon was a neat place to visit, although I took the slow way to the top of the tourist area, I walked it (only about 5 miles). Although add in the camera backpack, non-carbon fiber tripod, and water, and I was wishing at times that I took the bus :)Also, after this trip I threw a can of bug spray into my standard travel pack. I was under heavy attack from both bugs and the cactus, I swear they just jumped out at me and did a great job of piercing my jeans!Onto the pictures! (By the way, I took about 900 pictures, I'm just too lazy to process them all!)

Things I learned

  • BUG SPRAY!
  • Could use some decent hiking boots for when I left the trail, worn out tennis shoes aren't that great for that

20050305 Gulf Breeze Renaissance Festival

Happened to see this one the day of as I popped onto the internet to check out events going on. I was planning to check out Eden Garden out towards Panama City but that can wait! Definitely not even in the same class as the Ohio Renaissance Festival but it had some interesting sights.

Things I learned:

  • Tripod good, being tall is good too. There was another photographer there a good head shorter than me... I had a significant height advantage to peer over crowds (with camera on tripod jacked way up high and me on my tip toes trying to peer through the viewfinder to focus
  • Still working on this fill flash thing. I'd love to use it except in really bright mid-day light, even stopped way down I am exceeding the 1/500 sync shutter speed
  • I need a big sign on my head saying "I do not work for the newspaper!"

20050204 Pensacola Mardi Gras

Alan at a Mardi Gras... the world has to be coming to an end. Alan with his camera at a Mardi Gras, much more palatable thought! My friend Kelley was headed out here and I 'tagged' along with my equipment! Should be an interesting sight, and it was to say the least.

Funny thing I heard:Ow! That's bright! (Someone who was at the receiving end of my SB-800 flash, I LOVE IT!)

Things I learned:

  • Upgrade flash batteries to NiMH 2400's!!!!! I ran out of juice out there! That flash is absolutely incredible as I was shooting at least 30 feet away at all times (see next note on why I was shooting that far
  • Stay out of the way of flailing arms! Got knocked twice on the head!
  • ARGH RED-EYE!!!! To buy: Flash Bracket!
  • 70-200 w/ VR engaged is flat out awesome.

Shot everything at 1/60, fstop set for whatever appropriate depth of field, flash on i-TTL at about equiv of 160 mm (35mm)
